Mangrove Forests on the coastal lines have always served as a hub for harbouring flora and fauna. Mangroves are trees and shrubs that grow and live in tropical coastal regions. They usually grow in low-oxygen soil with waters allowing sediments to accumulate. The roots of mangroves develop in a way that allows them to form an intrinsic network-like structure allowing filtering of sediments out of tides passing through. The root network also serves as a home for several aquatic life forms.

The amazing benefits of mangrove forests include:

  1. Home to several marine animals and plants

  2. Flood prevention

  3. Carbon sink

  4. Soil nutrient restoration

  5. Protective barriers to storms and tsunamis

Even with all the benefits of mangrove forests, they are constantly being demolished everywhere. With recent studies, the importance of mangrove forests is being recognized around the world. Restoration efforts are being taken in several countries. It is important to understand that there are several species of mangroves so restoration efforts should diversify the seedlings that are being planted to successfully recover biodiversity. The restoration efforts should also be constantly monitored to resolve any potential issues. Ecological restoration efforts have shown to have the most successful impact. The restoration efforts are much harder than planting terrestrial trees and require lots of planning, patience, and work.

To support the efforts of mangrove restoration, the best thing you can do is search for restoration efforts near you and volunteer to support the efforts. Fund the non-profit organizations working on this cause or research groups trying to improve the restoration efforts. Spread awareness in your local community. Mangrove restoration is very important to fight climate change.
